German Film Festival 2017 | Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe

Austrian writer Stefan Zweig has fled from the Nazis and Europe. In Rio, he attends a banquet held in his honour, and in Buenos Aires, he takes part in the PEN Congress. Arriving in New York in January 1941, he meets his first wife again and complains about how he is prevented from writing by the many people in Europe now requesting help. It is while living with his second wife, Lotte, in the Brazilian city of Petrópolis that he is able to work on his novella, The Royal Game. But tragedy strikes a few months later.

Director Maria Schrader succeeds in creating a haunting film on the subject of exile that also reflects a piece of European cultural history. With award-winning actor Josef Hader in the eponymous role, she has found a brilliant leading man for this biopic.
